Seven ways to cut the queue at your billing counter

· 5 min read · Cartix team

Before adding a counter, spend one evening standing behind the existing one with a stopwatch. In most shops the queue traces back to a small number of specific delays, and every one of them is fixable in a week.

1. Fix the items that will not scan

Every shop has a handful of products whose barcode is worn, wrapped over a fold, or simply not in the system. Each one costs fifteen to thirty seconds and a small argument. Print your own labels for them.

2. Put your top thirty items on tiles

The 80/20 rule is brutal at a counter. Thirty items usually cover most of the lines billed in a day, and almost all of them are loose or unbarcoded. One tap should add them.

3. Stop typing customer details mid-queue

Look the customer up by phone number, or add them after the bill is saved. Never make eleven people wait while someone spells a name.

4. Decide the payment flow in advance

The UPI QR should be permanently displayed, facing the customer, before the total is announced. A customer who starts opening their app at the moment the total appears has already cost you fifteen seconds.

5. Move the scanner, not the goods

A handheld scanner on a stand that the staff member lifts for heavy items is faster than lifting a five-kilo bag onto a platform. Small change, repeated four hundred times a day.

6. Keep the keyboard as the primary input

Every switch between keyboard and mouse costs roughly a second and breaks the operator's rhythm. If your software needs the mouse to add a customer, change quantity, or apply a discount, that is where your seconds are going.

7. Hold, do not restart

When a customer realises they forgot something, hold the bill and serve the next person. Without a hold function, the whole queue waits for one person to walk to the back of the shop.

Measure it afterwards

Bill count per hour and average lines per bill are both in your reports. Take a baseline week, make the changes, and compare. If peak-hour bill count has not moved, the problem is genuinely counter capacity and it is time to add one.
