Barcode editing

How to edit barcode labels without mixing up products or prices

· 5 min read · Cartix team

“Edit the barcode” can mean moving the bars on a sticker, changing a printed price, or assigning a different code to a product. These are different jobs. Identifying the change first helps you avoid a neat-looking label that points to the wrong item.

Decide what needs to change

  • The layout: move or resize the product name, price or barcode so the label is easier to read.
  • The printed details: update the label’s name, price, date or other field for the intended batch.
  • The product identifier: change which barcode value is assigned to a product in the catalogue.

A barcode is a machine-readable representation of data. A GS1 GTIN is a product identifier; EAN and UPC are barcode formats that can carry it. Rendering a new barcode image does not register a new GS1 identifier or establish ownership of a number. If you are introducing a branded product for external retail distribution, check GS1’s identification process.

Edit the label design in Cartix Label Studio

In the Cartix Windows desktop app, open Label Studio and select Templates & designer. Open an existing template or start a new one. The designer lets you add text, barcodes, QR codes and shapes, then move, resize and rotate them on the canvas.

  1. 1Set the label width and height to match the stock you plan to use.
  2. 2Select the field you want to change and adjust its position, size or rotation.
  3. 3For text, choose an appropriate font, size and alignment.
  4. 4Use the grid and snap controls to line up the information. Undo or redo a change as needed.
  5. 5Save a copy when you want a new layout alongside the existing one, then choose Save & use for printing.

Templates are reusable: a price-only shelf label and a product sticker with barcode and dates can be separate designs. The template describes the layout; the products and label fields supply the details for the current print batch. Import and export are available for template files.

Change a printed price without changing product identity

Selling price, MRP and barcode are separate fields in the Cartix label workflow. When the shelf price changes, check the product record first, then review the price in the batch you will print. Keep the intended barcode value when the product identity has not changed.

A manual edit to a label field changes the printed details. Do not assume it updates the product catalogue. Before attaching new stickers, scan a sample at the counter and compare the billed price with the printed price.

For variants, check the precise size, colour or pack being labelled. For lot-tracked goods, verify the lot barcode and batch details. Manufacturing and expiry fields can be entered for a label batch, so review them for the delivery being handled rather than carrying an old date forward.

Keep the code readable after editing

Give the barcode enough room on the label and preserve the clear space around it. Do not place a border or price directly against the bars. After moving or resizing it, prepare a new preview and scan an actual print. Screen appearance alone cannot confirm the result on your printer and stock.

Label Studio offers formats including Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC and Code 39, as well as QR and Data Matrix. The appropriate choice depends on the data and the scanner. If your existing workflow uses a linear barcode scanner, confirm compatibility before replacing a barcode with a QR code.

Preview the batch before replacing old labels

Choose the saved template, review each product’s label fields and quantities, then select the printer and roll profiles. Check the physical preview, print a small sample and scan it. Only then print the remaining labels and replace the old ones.

For Malayalam product names, choose a font that contains the required characters and verify a sample on your chosen printing route. For A4 sheets, use the separate sheet workflow and match the layout to your paper. A saved design is useful only when it also fits the stock at the counter.

Questions people ask

Does editing a barcode label change my stock or selling price?

A label-field edit controls what is printed. Review and update the product record separately when catalogue information needs to change, then check a scanned sample against the label.

Can I save more than one barcode label design?

Yes. Cartix Label Studio supports saved templates and a Save copy action, so you can keep different designs for product stickers, shelf labels and other label layouts.

Does barcode label software issue GS1 product numbers?

Generating or printing a barcode image does not register a GS1 GTIN. Use the product identifier assigned for your intended use and follow GS1’s process when you need a GS1 identifier.
